I'm basically obsessed with every Litchfield inmate on Orange is The New Black , but Poussey might be one of my favorites. From the beginning, she's been incredibly intriguing. She's intelligent, she's motivated, and she's genuinely kindhearted to her fellow prisoners. And her friendship with Taystee? If I was in prison, I'd definitely want Poussey on my side — and her backstory is absolutely fascinating. Unfortunately, we didn't get a ton of that backstory in Season 3, but we saw a bit in Season 2.

In what is arguably the greatest love story of our time, or at least this week in particular, "Orange Is The New Black" writer Lauren Morelli has broken up with her husband and since begun dating Samira Wiley , the actress who plays Poussey on the show. According to Morelli , it was writing scenes for Piper and Alex that gave her clarity on her own sexuality. I realized I was gay in fall , one of my first days on the set. It wasn't so much one thing, but the sum of many small details: how uncomfortable I felt around groups of lesbians or how I considered myself shrug a "not very sexual person. Wanting to read a book instead of have sex is a perfectly reasonable preference to have, right? But on set, these small moments came into sharp relief, and I found myself answering to an endless stream of cast members who peppered me with questions like a gaggle of kindergartners curious about their new teacher.

Sitting next to her, a white guy with dreads plays a steel drum. An Asian mother falls asleep; when her little boy opens her wallet to take some cash, Poussey catches the eye of a middle-aged man in a turban. They smile, sharing the secret. Poussey watches Wall Street suits offering a flask to two girls, then gazes at an older black woman reading Michael Chabon, an interracial couple kissing, a pregnant woman, some jocks. For anyone who lives in New York City, this is a familiar vision of cosmopolitan heaven—a weave of strangers, open and curious.
