Team matchmaking is now a part of ranked matchmaking, meaning the pool of available opponents for teams and full parties is now much larger. To play as a team, form a party of five players. Teams will be preferentially matched with other teams, however they may also be matched with a party of five that is not using a team identity. To make way for this new approach to ranked Team Matchmaking, we have cleared the MMRs of all existing teams.

Dota 2 Ranking System (MMR, Ranks, & Leagues) | FirstBlood®
A comprehensive matchmaking system is an important factor in being able to enjoy playing Dota, regardless of which hero or role you prefer. Matchmaking involves various tradeoffs and our goal is to find the best balance between all the different factors. There are two major aspects with this change: 1 the teamplay and social aspect and 2 the value and correctness of the MMR value. For the teamplay aspect: We think it is really crucial for you to not have a disincentive to play with your friends. The game currently overly emphasizes playing solo and establishes a strong social reward mechanism for this, which causes many players to prefer playing alone than with friends. We believe that bias has over time caused more negativity and unhappiness when playing Dota. Furthermore, Dota is a very teamplay heavy game and we want to consider that aspect a bit more strongly in the hierarchy of matchmaking values.
Dota 2 Ranking System - How to Rank Up in Dota 2?
Matchmaking is perhaps the most important component of Dota 2. Because it is a competitive team-based game, how you get ranked and teamed with other people is crucial. Your entire experience depends upon these things and Valve has decided to finally give the matchmaking system the attention it deserves. If you wanted to play solo-queue, you were viewed through the filter of your solo MMR, which meant this: whenever you tried to search for a game, your opponents and teammates were determined using the same criteria and thus, you were basically asked to play alongside and against people of similar solo MMR. The main problem with this system had to do with the fact that Dota 2 is a highly sophisticated game.
Coaching gives players the ability to provide in-game guidance to other players in their party. It should be noted that upon completion of the game, the coach will not be eligible for item drops or battle points , however, players in game will benefit from any active battle bonuses the coach may have. Coaches do not get penalties or an abandon for leaving the match or being inactive either. They also will not get a party-abandon if a player in their party abandons. A coach's communications can only be seen by their students.
