Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker on Monday signed into law HR , a bill that bans gay conversion therapy on minors, making Massachusetts the 16th state to prohibit the medically discredited and controversial practice. Currently, talk therapy is the most commonly used therapy technique, but some practitioners have also combined this with "aversion treatments," such as induced vomiting or electric shocks, according to a report by the Williams Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles. Tens of thousands of LGBTQ youth, 13 to 17, are likely to undergo conversion therapy before they turn 18, the report states. This year, New York and Puerto Rico banned the practice.

The gay rights movement in the United States has seen huge progress in the last century, and especially the last two decades. Laws prohibiting homosexual activity have been struck down; lesbian, gay and bisexual individuals are now allowed to serve openly in the military transgender individuals were allowed to serve openly from until March , when a new ban was put in place. And same-sex couples can now legally get married and adopt children in all 50 states. But it has been a long and bumpy road for gay rights proponents, who are still advocating for employment, housing and transgender rights.

The Russian federal law "for the Purpose of Protecting Children from Information Advocating for a Denial of Traditional Family Values" , also known in English-language media as the "gay propaganda law"  and the "anti-gay law" ,     is a bill that was unanimously approved by the State Duma on 11 June with just one MP abstaining— Ilya Ponomarev ,  and was signed into law by President Vladimir Putin on 30 June The Russian government's stated purpose for the law is to protect children from being exposed to homosexuality —content presenting homosexuality as being a norm in society—under the argument that it contradicts traditional family values. The statute amended the country's child protection law and the Code of the Russian Federation on Administrative Offenses , to prohibit the distribution of " propaganda of non-traditional sexual relationships " among minors. This definition includes materials that "raises interest in" such relationships, cause minors to "form non-traditional sexual predispositions", or "[present] distorted ideas about the equal social value of traditional and non-traditional sexual relationships.
